Paulami is based out of New Delhi. She started this label/ business in 2014 January with her first exhibition in Dastkar-Delhi.
Paulami studied Accessory Design specialising in crafts from NIFT Hyderabad but was keen to work for design agencies just because they sounded more glamorous at that time. After going through few companies she realised her penchant wasn’t in softwares etc. rather in getting my hands dirty. Hence, a shift to a start-up branch of Invitation Design company happened where she felt the most creatively satisfied. While, she was very happy with the freedom this firm provided, the desire of doing something of my own persisted.
After a lot of mind-surfing, it just sort of fell upon her that why not pick up Kantha Stitch which was was the simplest stitch she had come across and do something innovative. Now since she is Bengali it seemed the most reasonable start point.
Even though she loved handicraft products and they filled most of her shopping lists, this was the first time she actually began working with it.
The idea started with creatively use Kantha Embroidery in bags and accessories keeping in mind a modern aesthetic sense armed with very good finishing. For this she packed her bags and went to Shantiniketan to scout for the best Kantha embroiderers.
All the Kantha graphic is designed by her and embroidered at Shantiniketan, keeping in the highest quality of work in mind. The bags are then fabricated in several other places depending on the design.
Paulami has recently started up a jewellery line, some with kantha embroidered bibs and another with the left over Katrans from the other collections. For the katrans jewellery line, she has been training few women for the handiwork in Delhi itself.
In course of travels, she has come across several other crafts that she has also tried to explore in limited capacity.
For example, she has used Ettikopaka turned wood toys from A.P to make handles for a bag, or used rough jute hand weaving along with Leather in another collection.
So while Kantha stitch is her main muse, Paulami am also flirting with other crafts.
Currently her products are available in a few stores in Delhi, Kochi and Bangalore. She also sells through her Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/
byPAULAMI and then clients can sometimes also WhatsApp her for more orders.
