Because every big dream begins with Chhoti si Asha
Bebaak is an urdu word synonymous of bold & upfront. Zeal to promote the hand woven and craft inspired contemporary products inspired Kavita to start Bebaak. Bebaak focuses on developing contemporary products inspired from handwoven textile & hand crafted work. Our core value is to bring recognition to the heritage skills & craft.
After graduating from Delhi University Kavita did her masters in marketing from Pune. She worked with two organizations in the development sector specially artisan promotion field. She has been involved in craft research, enterprise promotion projects, marketing of handloom & handicrafts.
“Generally before working on our collection we research about the mindset we want to target. The mind set which goes beyond age, gender and region. After ground study we work on patterns & cuts that can go well with our target group ”
Kavita wants to focus on handloom & handcrafted products – patience of hand work brings beautiful and enchanting aura. It brings the confidence of hard work and creativity. Through Kalamkari and blockprint collections Bebaak has been showcasing vibrant story of craft while through handwoven cotton collections the venture is been developing classic yet bold statements.
“I am in love with those qualities. I find handwoven Ikat textile of Odisha marvellously amazing. We have seen the Ikat craft of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha but hardly heard of Chhattisgarh with same craft. An unexplored region and craft of Chhattisgarh is Saraipali and Tie and dye weaving respectively. Saraipali is situated in Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh. Weavers over here have less exposure to the market. Their main marketing hub is nearby Bargad city of Odisha. As weavers are not getting enough order in ikat weaving, slowly they are migrating toward other livelihood option or plain cotton weaving. The fantastic skill of tie and dye weaving is getting shattered due to lack of order.”
“Weavers community here need support, guidance in terms of designs and marketing to promote their work. We have collaborated with a cooperative in Saraipali for some design development. Here is the outcome of the same. ” says Kavita
Bebaak’s new collection is revolving around handwoven cotton of Chhattisgarh. Hand embroidery and block printed fabrics are used for the finishing of the products. The collection is again another contemporary representation of traditional hand woven craft.
“All I can say is that journey so far is filled with alone trips to interiors, night stay in station platform, lunch with artisans and story listening. I have been lucky with the people around me who have been there as strong pillars in ups & downs.”
